Charlestown is a residential and commercial suburb located 10 kilometres southwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Lake Macquarie. The suburb enjoys proximity to Glenrock State Conservation Area, Dudley Beach and Lake Macquarie. The Aboriginal Awabakal people were the original inhabitants of the area that makes up Charlestown today. Following European settlement, a coal mine operated in the district from 1873 to 1961. It has since developed into a residential and commercial suburb and forms a part of Greater Newcastle. Charlestown is the largest suburb in the Lake Macquarie locality.
