Adamstown is a residential suburb located six kilometres southwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Newcastle. Adamstown is home to Merewether Golf Club and enjoys proximity to Merewether Beach and Glenrock State Conservation Area. The suburb is found between Broadmeadow to the north and Adamstown Heights to the south.
The Awabakal Aboriginal people were the first inhabitants of the area that makes up Adamstown today. Following European settlement, Adamstown was officially declared a suburb in 1885. Adamstown railway station opened in 1887 and Merewether Golf Club was established in the suburb in 1933. In 1938 Adamstown and other local council areas merged to form the Greater Newcastle area.
Adamstown Station is located on the western fringe of the suburb's residential district. Newcastle Velodrome is found in Adamstown's northeast, while Merewether Golf Club is situated in the suburb's southeast, adjacent to its namesake suburb. The outer bushland of Glenrock State Conservation Area is partly located in Adamstown's south, next to Merewether Golf Club and the Australian Air Force Cadets' City of Newcastle Squadron.
